Roland Velich, winemaker at Moric (pronounced Moritz), produces native Burgenlandish varietal wines in a Burgundian style, combining his Austrian roots with French training. His old vine Blaufränkisch grows on terraced hillsides in Burgenland. “Multi-layered, expressive, maybe even mysterious, but certainly delicate: those are the attributes that have allowed wine to exhilarate men for centuries,” says Velich of his approach to winemaking. The wine is juicy, with dark fruit, acidity, earth and dark herbaceousness. You can read more about Velich, his Moric project, and Blaufrankisch here.
