Magnum Monday: Hamel Family Wine


This young, fun winery (founded in the middle of the last decade) represents a mix of estate fruit and wine sourced from some other choice spots around Sonoma’s Banana Belt, Glen Ellen. The Hamel family are native San Franciscans who followed their love of wine and wine culture into the business, relocating to Sonoma to set up vineyards and eventually begin to bottle their own wines commercially.

Big bro George (or “G3″) serves as managing Managing Director of Hamel Family Wines, overseeing the financial and Front of House operations at HFW. Lil bro John Hamel, having studied first in Wisconsin and later Enology and Viticulture at UC Davis, manages the vineyards (along with the legendary Phil Coturri) and oversees winery work. They focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Bordeaux grapes, and Zinfandel. Fun fact: before even Christina Turley or Broc were releasing their “white zinfandel” roses, the Hamel family vinified their own dry “white zin” on a very small scale back in 2006. With respect to final blending decisions, the whole family (including mom) get together to vote on the finished picture.
