Free Spirt Farms & Sierra Orchards Walnut Orchard

A farm within a farm, Free Spirit’s ten fertile acres are nestled in a grove of walnut trees belonging to The Center for Land-Based Learning’s Farm on Putah Creek. October 1st marks the beginning of the walnut harvest; we’ll get a live demonstration of the harvest, complete with the shaker clutching the walnuts from the trees.
Free Spirit’s energetic founder Toby Hastings is the prototype “next generation” millennial farmer; Zagat recently described him as one of “SF Bay Area’s Food-World Up-and-Comers” in their annual “30 Under 30” review. Today, his petite plot provides fare for over 40 of San Francisco’s finest restaurants. Join Toby as he guides us through his blackberry bushes, tomato and pepper fields. We’ll also meet his pasture-raised chickens, goats and pigs. Trou Normand Chef and Charcutier, Sal Cracco will provide an elegant family-style lunch with local wine pairings and produce from the farm.
