Last Week, Kevin Liles Came to Nopa: A Convergence...
Earlier in the week, in our Better Late Than Never Weekly Recap, we eluded to a special guest visitor on Sunday evening. What was supposed to be a quick follow up about a special dinner guest turned into a long introspective on race and career and black culture. I was happy to have stoked these thoughts, but sorry this took so long to post. I am weary of saying that something will be posted in a...

Better Late Than Never: Volume 6
Better Late Than Never: Volume 6  February 6-12 Our Weekly Recap Of Happenings Within and Outside Our Restaurant  The calendar reads February 13. Six weeks into the new year, six volumes in. Makes sense. The news of the week is obviously the sudden and shocking death of Whitney Houston. Ally and I were talking this morning about how strong our memories and associations with her music...

John McEnroe Comes to Nopalito: A Story
Yesterday, as one of our most frequent and favorite brunchers reported, we were very busy.  In the late afternoon, one of the greatest tennis players in American history came to our door. We were thrilled, but sadly, couldn’t promise brunch at such a late hour.   bummer.  But, our hosts, quick on their feet, suggested that he visit our sister down the road. So Mr. McEnroe went to...

Better Late Than Late Never, Volume 5
It’s not called Better Late Than Never for nothing. Just as we were preparing to set record breaking time for getting this post up, there was a sinister, comedic series of technical and electrical failures that happened in such a way, that we are compelled to believe Mondays at 9PM PST will always be the time when these recaps happen. So be it. Better late than never, volume 5.

WatchWatch
Thursday February 2, 2012 Groundhog Day In one of the most peculiar American traditions, on Thursday morning in In case Punxsutawney, PA, a rodent proclaimed there would be six more weeks of winter. Thankfully, that memo didn’t reach us here in SF, as we carry on with… actually, let’s not jinx it. You can watch the video of the ceremony and the exuberant followers who are bundled tightly, but...

A Perspective On Rooting in California
The view from Ida B. Wells  It’s official. I’ve rooted in California. Sure there is still the obligatory maniacal adoption of San Francisco sports teams, spontaneous eccentric costuming and unfathomable irritability upon hearing the “Western Addition” referred to as anything else, but my actions on Friday  brought me very close to the final rounds of validation. More...
